Biography of a (Wanna Be) Tomboy
I grew up riding dirt bikes and skateboards, mostly in an effort to keep up with my two brothers, but rarely doing so successfully. Skinned knees and tail pipe burns eventually killed the desire to impress. But an aversion to puffy sleeves and anything too pink or frilly was engrained.
I have been designing and making clothing since I met my first sewing machine in 7th grade Home-Economics class. Although I studied fine art painting at the Kansas City Art Institute I always knew my calling was apparel design. Through a series of smart decisions and fortunate breaks, I have acquired the skills of a master tailor and pattern drafter. I worked in the apparel industry for eight years before taking up full time freelance work in 1999.
In late 2002, with the economy in the tank, I woke up one day and realized it was the perfect time to pursue my ultimate dream job. (But NASA said they already had enough monkeys in space.) So, I opened Tomboy design studio in April 2003.
